How pro boxing prepared me for Painting business

I started Cochran's Painting & Home Services in 2017. 1 year after I had my last fight to date . I had no prior business experience... So I thought at the time. All I knew was Boxing . I worked during my entire professional boxing career (as an Amateur fighter a bit too) off and on as a painter .Sometimes various other P/T jobs just to earn income in-between fights, which were mostly far in-between (every 3-6 months) since 2010 when I debuted . 1 year pass after taking 1 loss, Having issues with contract obligation, with no way getting on with my career for another year and a half. I was employed by a property management company to handle all their painting . That's where it began.

Slinging Paint for an apartment complex . While it wasn't as exhilarating as the sport, I took an immediate liking to doing this full time working for myself. I would be assigned 5-8 units a month and when I wasn't doing work for the apartments I'd be looking for other people to paint for . Calling up relatives and friends ,Looking on Facebook, and actually played the hit and miss game with THUMBTACK . Acquired the proper insurance and registered a D.B.A and hit the ground running.

At first I was winging it (not so much later) got a few Helpers working with me and began taking on as much work as I could be awarded. A lot of times the wrong kind of work . One Day I was speaking with a colleague about business, sports and life in general and it HIT me square in the chin. I was winging it for no apparent reason being I had YEARS experience in this arena we call BUSINESS. I had been a Business owner from the day I became a Professional Boxer.

Peep This. I'm Going to show you how this correlates. The fighter = The Business Owner. The trainer and cut-man = employees . The manager = The Foreman/project manager . The Promoter = The Client. Does it all sound pretty similar to you now? Before each fight there are duties everyone on the team is responsible for . Of course the fighter does the Strategic stuff. The manager negotiates the contracts and oversee training , and the trainers do their job training the athlete. At the end of the day its up to the fighter (Business Owner) to sign off on everything , agree and set the terms . Set the pay/hours/and duties of the team members . Making sure everybody is on their Job to the fullest of their capacity all while taking full responsibility of whats to happen on the whole. Boxer making sure all is well and able to fulfill all contractual obligations we promised to the Promoter (client). From Making sure all our paperwork ,licensing, and medicals are up to date. Showing up and Putting on a good performance (Completing job up to satisfactory standards)

Boxing and Business are similar, In all actuality Pro Boxing is a business. It has prepared me to venture out in my business. Rather its the Sweet Science or Painting a Beautiful accent wall the customer always will get the best version of me . A Professional young man who always stands by his work and meet any contractual obligations doing what he says he is going to do. With that being said, as long as I have the love and experience of boxing pumping through my veins , business will always be second nature to me since its no different from what I know and truly love.
