What A Handyman Can Do In Houston TX?

Who's Considered A Handyman?

The word "handyman" is a very broad term and could be associated with any tradesmen or skilled service provider . A Painter could be called a handyman as well as a contractor , builder or maintenance person. My definition would be a jack of all trades kind of person. A person who could do a little bit of this and a little of that. By definition a handyman is (a person able or employed to do occasional domestic repairs and minor renovations). A jack of all trades saying is A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one. Sometimes tradesmen look down on the handyman but in all honesty by definition, they are a handyman too. The qualifications for a handy person could go in a wide array of services. Some focus on the small installs and repairs, while others take on larger remodeling, renovation, and construction projects .

Does A Handyman Need A license?

In the Stat e of Texas the answer is No.To do small repair ,maintenance, and installations do not require licensing in the state of Texas. Lets say you have to do major plumbing or Electrical on a renovation . You would definitely need a license to perform tasks of this sort . Small jobs like installing toilets, faucets, and light fixtures the average handyman can take care of that . Without having to hire a full blown electrical or plumbing contractor. now licensing no but you must have a general liability policy at all times to perform any handy work .

Basic Handyman Skills Differ

The skill set differs from the service provider to the next . Some people start off in a specific trade (painting for example) and base their handy business around that specific skill. Doing other jobs they feel comfortable doing based on their skills . Then you have another handyman who does pretty much everything . So , choosing a handyman would solely be based on the skills he or she possess and the services offered. You may get someone who solely does painting , T.v. mounting or fences.

How Much It Cost To Hire A Handyman

This also varies according to Bob Villa " Typical hourly handyman rates are between $60 and $70 for independent workers and around $125 per hour for a handyman who works for a company' . That also varies as well . I know in my company there is a set price for every task that i perform rather than charging an hourly rate . Sometimes things don't go as you'd hope and take more time than expected Leaving you with a much larger bill than anticipated. I believe a flat rate for a task or even a days worth of work will better benefit my customers. For example : Painting a room . Which should take 4-6 hours for one coat of paint. If the coverage is poor you'll have to add another. After it fully dries and waits around a few hours you'll be back the next day . Then spend another 4 hours adding another coat . Lets do the math . 8 hours the first day and 4 hours the next times $60. Charging by the hour you would be paying $720 to paint the room Using a handyman who charges by the hour . A lot of times you can do it in less time (especially skilled painter) , this was just used for an example.

The same goes for smaller tasks . You can Mount a T.v. in less than an hour , But something can also go wrong with that as well adding more time . That's why I favor the flat rate per task method. Its a fair price where both the handy person and the customer will both benefit.
